Signal Features

Homepage: The homepage of your account showcases top sources and breaking news. You can customise your top sources and breaking news to ensure you are always seeing content that is relevant to you and your client roster.

Search: The search function allows you to see all articles in the media landscape in relation to your specific search. With the search function drop-down, you can search for organisations, people, topics, sources, and more. Once you have added your search words (ensuring you press enter after each one), you can change the date range in the top right. In this search, you will see the article's title, publication, reach data, a relevant snippet from the article, the amount of times the article is mentioned, as well as the overall sentiment. Additionally, you can use AI driven tags to help you understand what the article is about without having to read it all. If you are satisfied with your search, you can save it for future use.

Multiple search terms: Using the search drop down and selecting the correct search function, you can pair multiple search terms such as "generative AI", "Apple", "LLM" and "AI". You can then select whether you would like to search with “any of these terms”, “all of these terms” or “similar terms” in the drop down below. This means you can refine your search. If you are looking for specific coverage from a client, we would suggest selecting “all of these terms”, as “any of these terms” and “similar terms” widens the scope of the results pulled in.

Search Insights: As well as the articles tab, your search includes an insights tab where you can view the coverage over time as well as reach data, the most common topics within that search, the sentiment of these articles, top source locations, and top sources.

Search Summary: The summary on the right hand side captures how many articles Signal.ai pulled from your search, the predicted reach of those publications, the position of your search term within those articles, as well as overall sentiment and salience. They are interactive, so you can click into them for more filters.

Reading Lists: Reading lists allow you to compile sources trusted on specific topics, or tracked by specific clients. You have three options here: organisation lists, signal lists, or create your own list. The organisation lists are created by Cognito employees. Signal lists cover popular media publications such as "Global top 50 sources" and more. If your client is particularly interested in a selection of target publications, you are able to create your own, customised reading list. You can then use these reading lists when running your searches to ensure you only see results from the publications that you and your clients care about.

Bulletins: Bulletins are automated email alerts sent by Signal.ai. Bulletins allow you to stay on top of the coverage coming out of the platform without having to regularly track and read every publication or article. You can create your own bulletins or join those already within your team. In order to set up your own bulletin, you must first create and save a search. You can decide how often you would like to receive the bulletin and who you would like to send it too, as well as whether you want to track top or more recent stories.

Reports: to track and share specific articles from your searches, use the reports function. You can either add one at a time, or select multiple. These articles can either be added directly to a report for external sharing with the client or for internal reporting via email.

Dashboards: You can use the dashboards to run brand audits throughout the year and to track trends for that brand. You can also analyse competitors’ share of voice. The dashboards allow you to view coverage, media sentiment, top 20 publications features, spokespeople breakdown, and competitive comparisons over time. Whenever you see a trend that interests you, you can click in in order to learn more. On the right hand side, you can filter by target media, sentiment, etc.

What are the guidelines for use of this tool:

  • Rolling 15 month archive: Signal.ai only holds articles for 15 months. If you would like to ensure you can keep track of work you have done for clients or internally, you will need to make sure you download your full year of content.
  • Not comprehensive: Signal.ai often does not capture content that lives behind a pay-wall. It also fails to capture certain publications such as FT Ignites and FT Sustainable Views. You can submit publications to the team to add to their list, just click the feedback extension in the tool. If you are expecting a specific piece of coverage for a client, you will need to consult the site to ensure you do not miss the piece.
  • Lack of accuracy: Signal.ai does filter out brand mentions on corporations’ websites, which can skew results. For example, if your client’s event is advertised on a site several times, this will count several times in the report.
